I would also like to point out that there are many bands that give their music for free in the Internet. Being broke is not a good excuse for illegal downloading.

You're right, I think I'll go into debt just to hear a metal album.

Don't be silly.  Who would give you credit?  You have no job and you're like 13.

Ask your mom to get you some metal albums for your birthday.

Man, do you read the messages you reply to? I'm talking about bands that give their music for free. You can listen to metal until your ears bleed for free.

Yes but pop fans do not.

I agree. The problem is that some metal fans are starting to behave like pop fans.

[...] We still care, and very few pop acts can muster anything like that kind of loyalty.

I know that I still care. If I didn't have any money, I would download free metal and write reviews for the best bands.

A pop album that sells 200,000 copies is considered a gross failure.  A metal album that sold that many is one of the all-time best sellers.

That's another reason to open our wallets. The money of any given metalhead is, in proportion, more relevant than the money of any given pop fan.

Funny... I used to have money for maybe one, sometimes two albums a month.  For the rest, we'd trade tapes amongst friends (very often not albums, just songs from various artists), or we just visited and listened to music there.  None of us died (well, not from that anyway.)  Today's "culture of entitlement" that they keep talking about sure isn't a myth.

You're right, I think I'll go into debt just to hear a metal album.

I no longer have a job and I'm broke now, after spending my last money on a couple of CD's last week (I even scraped together the last few coins I had lying around to afford the last CD in the batch). I honestly can't wait to find a new job so I can afford to buy more CD's again, it's practically the only money sink I have on a regular basis apart from life's essentials. I sample CD's on youtube or myspace after reading reviews, then write down the ones I wish to purchase in a long list. I haven't downloaded a single song (or video) in over two years.

I cannot be more happy to support the metal bands I love.

Do you not think the music you're listening to is worth the money? If I was an established musician, I'd be happy that people listened to and liked my music, but I'd be really fucking insulted if they didn't find it worthwhile enough to buy, or if they did, but would rather spend the same money on some worthless shit later. Because they can get my music for free, but not that other worthless shit they're going to purchase instead.

That's because it was the only thing you had. Why would you spend time trading tapes when anything and everything is just a minute away at your fingertips, and for free!

Why would you plough a field with horses when you have a tractor?

You wouldn't, but it's because you already paid for the tractor. What else would you use it for?

The fact that you take it without paying doesn't make it free.

Why would you plough a field with horses when you have a tractor?

Because the tractor is bad for the field.

My 2 cents:

When metal music was not available for downloand i made so many blind purchases... some were positive suprises but some were burning (and expensive) disappointement.
Now downloading helps me to choose which CD to buy, because if i like what i downloaded i am not satisfied with a bunch of files, i always need to search for the physical support.

I still buy a good number of cd (from 5 to 15 each month) but i admit that downloading is giving me two big advantages:

- the chance to "sample" albums of bands that i would never buy without testing them first.
- it allows me to wait a little bit aftera release date, until prices are getting a bit lower (here in Italy a new CD is priced around 17/20 Euro but if i wait a month or two i can buy it on eBay from USA for 12 Euro more or less, shipping including... and on relatively big numbers this actually makes a difference).
