This might seem like a really dumb ass question but here goes anyway...

What is it about Metalcrypt.com that made you come here in the first place and more importantly what has made you stay? I have been here quite a while (with a few MIA months here and there) and although I am a bit biased because of that for me it would have to be simply the quality and integrity.

Quality
I truly believe we have some of the best reviews of any metal site. Here you will get clearly written and concise reviews that don't go on for days. Highlight of that I would definitely have to say is Sargon. I have yet to see a poor review from him even if it's about a band I don't even like. Extremely well written (at least way better than mine... ) and all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Integrity
You will never see nu metal crap here and you will certainly never see a review that bows down to one record label or another. We have all seen other sites that will review anything a record company sends them no matter how non metal it really is. Although I may be biased I do have to say that I believe Metalcrypt really is a metal site done by metal fans for metal fans.

Kind of hard to really "know" someone online so I was just kind of curious about other people's perspective...

With a combination of reading the reviews, the "Metal Genres" section, and the message board, I quickly started discoving new bands and expanding my tastes in metal. Basically, I almost completely agree with what Mystophales said.

Well..for me, I was looking to hook up with some young fresh studs, maybe get a liquid latex party poppin..But I came across this site, and then I cleaned my screen off.
Honestly?, I cant remember why..All I know is that I have had some great times here, and I respect the people on here, and even though we dont see eye to eye (Pavelic ) we seem to always have some fun here.Reviews are killer, and this board has opened my eyes to SOOOO  many bands.. I have met some cool guys/gals on here (Clanny, where are you?) I enjoy the banter andsharing music, movies, and all that heart warming shit.
Now I will slam my fucking nuts in the fucking fridge door..just so I have an excuse to say fuck again.

Geez, guys, I'm blushing.

I came here because I was a regular reader of Metalgospel - which I miss terribly - and I read Cheryl's interview with Michel, where he said he was looking for reviewers.  Now I have wanted to be a metal reviewer since I was 16 or so, reading Metal Maniacs and Power Metal and thinking "I could write that, how do I get that job?"  Well, Michel was foolish enough to let me contribute, and so initally I stayed just because I was getting to do something I always wanted to do.

But now I stay because this is the site for me.  There is no crap on this site.  We review real fucking metal here, and nothing else.  I have tried branching out into other sites, and I just didn't like it - I didn't like the whole ethos at work in other places.  Metalcrypt is by fans for fans.  Nobody makes us spend our time and money on this, we do it because we love it.  When I discover a new band, I can tell a whole lot of people about it, and I have discovered some great music here myself.  Sometimes it's hard to find the time and energy to keep doing it, but it all comes back to the music, and how much fun I have here-how I finally have the chance to do something I always wanted to do, and it's even more fun than I thought.

I came here for the reviews, but I stay in this forum because of its sincerity. If people think your music/you suck, they say it to your face. The fact that the juvenile psedudometal is kept at bay is also a definite plus.

Honestly i don't remember.
I'm always looking for reviews of old metal bands so probably i came across this website while i was targeting some old releases..
As the same has previously happened with METALGOSPEL it's also possible that i've found there some references to Metalcrypt.
I don't post much because my english sucks but i stayed here because the reviews are really close to my tastes, much more than any other website.

Maybe a bit of history while we're at it...

About 7 years ago I wanted to start a web site just to try various technologies.  I had no idea what to do though.  So one day I was attending a show and chatting with friends and one of them told me I should write reviews (we had been discussing various bands/albums for a couple of hours.)  About a week later (Sept. 18, in fact), I created a very basic web site named "Michel's Metal Page" (which later became Michel's Metal Crypt, then The Metal Crypt.)  The primary idea was just to write reviews from a fan's perspective.  I had been reading way too many reviews that seemed to assume that readers were musicians (which I am not) and I figured it wouldn't hurt to have reviews out there that were "from the common man for the common man", if you will.  That's what you get from me: Reviews from a metal fan's perspective.  If you want details on what notes or what other "musician" thing the band is doing, don't read my reviews (that should be obvious anyway...)  Unlike Sargon and Tony, I'm not a writer (well, I'm told I'm a good technical writer, but that doesn't do much good for things like reviews) and my first language is French, not English (by the way, DeadlyBlessing, your written English is better than many English speakers', so I wouldn't worry too much about that.)  Anyway, that gives some variety to the written words on this site.

At first the reviews were rare - once a week or two, then I started reviewing a bit more.  In early 2000 Mystophales joined in and reviewed quite a bit - you can see that in the About section: He hasn't reviewed much in the past couple of years yet he's the fourth in number of reviews written.  Anyway, eventually we started doing some interviews and added other things like the editorials, artist features (badly in need of updates), etc... But any regular reader knows the primary goal of the web site is still and will always be reviews. 

Reviewers came and went for a couple of years, which brings us to the end of 2002 when I changed project at work and, while I could still listen to metal for the larger part of the day, it became more of a background music thing since my mind was fully on this new stuff.  So I couldn't write reviews at work anymore (I used to write them during my break or at lunch time, but with its new status as background music, I had nothing to write about!!!)  So I posted on a couple of boards asking for reviewers.  Several people answered, and only a few actually wrote anything and many only wrote one or two.  I should have used a point system like Metal-Archives.   Then one day I had this e-mail that looked like spam (the subject was something like "So why should we hire you?" or something like that.  I almost deleted it but ended up reading it.  That was Sargon introducing himself.  He quickly became the most active reviewer.  Later Tony showed up as well.  I'm not sure when 4th Horseman and chaossphere joined up.  I remember Sargon very clearly because of his e-mail and the mention that he had read the interview in Metal Gospel.

Against all odds the site is still up.  I found it fun for the first 4 years or so, but it can be a burden at times.  When we started getting promos, we were getting them directly from bands and at least we were getting metal - sometimes it sucked, but it was metal.  But when labels started sending stuff, all hell broke loose.  Lots of non-metal crap is sent our way, I'd say in the past couple of years 3 out of 4 promos have been non-metal.  That would make sense if this was a generic music web site, but, you know, it does say "The METAL Crypt".  Somehow labels think we'll review any shit.  Of course there's what they consider metal, such as nu-puke and (non)metalcore.  Bleh.  Anyway, that wastes my time and in the end I barely have time to listen to the stuff I purchase myself.  I guess that's good for my wallet, but not for my ears.   Sometimes I feel like shutting the whole thing down, then the next day I'm having fun doing it.  Must be my feminine site.

I like the fact that the site is run from the Ottawa/Hull area (I'm in Orleans).  The reviews are also really well done, and the forum is excellent as well, as you can say pretty much anything you want (in terms of bashing bands).  Finally, the group of people here definitely know their metal, and have introduced me to a countless number of amazing bands.

By the way, what happened to Lord Requiem?  I need mow reviews from him.

What lured me here in the first place was Sargon's reviews and the Metal Genres. I was a noob at the time and I remember having a list of favorite bands something like:

"1. Pantera
 2. Burzum
 3. Judas Priest
 4. System of a Down"

etc.

This site pretty much introduced me to a lot of great bands and provided me with a wider understanding of Metal. After I had gathered enough knowledge of excellent bands, I had began writing reviews for Enslaved By Metal - Then I stopped because I thought that I could instead do them for my favorite Metal site.

I do not review much, but I try to do my best... But sometimes I don't read my work over and when I go through them quickly on the site, I think I write like a retard!
