Metal is Forever

So-called jazz metal.
« on: February 13, 2009, 08:31:54 AM »

Hi.

Do you know any bands that can be defined as jazz metal?

I'm learning to play the bass. The only musical education I can get is classical (that I love) and jazz (that I detest). Perhaps if I listened to some 'jazz metal' bands my studies would be more meaningful and begin to appreciate jazz music. Thank you.   thumbup

I haven't really given them a good listen but I've heard that Cynic is jazz metal, so maybe you should check them out.

A lot of bands (mostly progressive metal ones) have jazz influences and sections, though Cynic is the band with the most direct jazz.  For them, I suppose it's more than an influence; it's part of their genre.

I think learning to play jazz would be a fantastic influence on any metal you play, unless you're purely into black and death metal.

You should probably check out Jaco Pastorius' stuff - its fully jazz fusion but since you're learning bass and are asking for jazz metal you should just listen to good jazz. While you're there you can check out Victor Wooten as well.

Check out the band Ephel Duath, thier first 2 albums are like jazzcore its like extreme jazzy black/death or whatever you wanna call it.  I dont find them all that good but they are impressive musicians.

There's an avant garde metal band named Akphaezya that I like a lot, they're pretty jazzy.

I found Cynic's latest, "Traced in Air," to be quite jazz-influenced (not that I like a lot of jazz).

The words "Jazz" and "Metal" do not really go together.

Yes, I know. I've done my homework.  Grin

The 'Metal Only' editorial explains why rap and metal belong to different worlds. The same might be said about jazz and metal. There are so many differences that we could talk for days about it. That's probably why there are so few 'jazz metal' bands out there. It is like 'Christian Black Metal' or 'Doom Thrash Metal'  Grin . However, if there are someone doing jazz metal and it's something I can use and/or enjoy, I would like to listen to it.   icon_smile

Agreed, but jazz is part of the influence on progressive rock -- and in turn shares in ancestor in metal in that waltz and classical technique basically defined jazz.

I'd recommend:

Pestilence - Spheres
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence

One band, Farmakon, blends lounge jazz and metal. It isn't really that great though.
