Do you think that there is, or there could ever be, acoustic metal? By that I mean using non-electric guitars.

Not entirely.

There are, of course, thousands of examples where acoustic guitar is used brilliantly in metal, but I won't bother listing them all because it would take all day and still be incomplete. As it is, the distorted electric guitar is a hallmark of metal and, really, without it metal couldn't exist, just like metal without riffs or drums becomes something entirely different.

Green Carnation.

I would definitely argue that their new acoustic album has a very metal sensibility, opposed to a lot of acoustic "rock" type stuff. It's much more epic than most acoustic music I've heard. Even though there's no distortion or any metal tribute songs ala Manowar, I see a metal influence in their songwriting. I guess, even though it doesn't sound particularly metal, it's got the diversity and intricacy that many metal bands prize.

I would love to see more "metal" acoustic albums in the near future.

Metal without electric guitar is like beer without alcohol.

Not that is doesn't have any electric guitar, but it has enough acoustic tracks to please Agis.

Nonetheless, fantastic stuff!  Grin

Hahah, actually, I've always thought Agalloch were pretty dull.

Don't worry, though, I'm going to give them another chance since everybody seems to think they're wonderful.

Metal is metal. "Raining Blood" could have been played on a trumpet, but it's still "Raining Blood". So why should it matter if it's played on an acoustic guitar or not?

Raining Blood can be played through tuneful farting.  It's still Raining Blood.
