Favorite movies/films/documentaries
« on: August 28, 2006, 04:02:30 PM »

I just remembered making a thread about this before the previous board was scrapped for this new one.  Anyway, I am currently a film major (aspiring filmmaker) that's just about to make my final film for school over the course of the next four months and because cinema is on my mind pretty much 24/7, I always wonder what movies/films/documentaries other people are fans of.  Not because I want to be a film snob, which I couldn't really be anyway, but because it's good to hear about what people like/dislike and to find out about films that I may not have heard of or haven't given much thought to seeing as of yet.

For me, my favorites include:

-Trainspotting
-The Tin Drum
-Distant Lights
-Winter Light
-Persona
-The Seventh Seal
-The Sword of Doom
-Seven Samurai
-Saving Private Ryan
-Schindler's List
-Clerks
-Stranger Than Paradise
-Night on Earth
-AKIRA
-The Crying Game
-The Big Lebowski
-Sunset Boulevard
-Fargo
-A Beautiful Mind
-American History X
-Taste of Cherry
-Marooned in Iraq
-Dog Day Afternoon
-To Be or Not to Be
-Kill Bill vol. 1 & 2 (I like the second better because the story is more compelling)
-Control Room (documentary on the media decisions are made from both sides - US and Iraq - in covering the current war in Iraq)

What's everyone else into?

I actually haven't seen many movies especially ones that have been deemed"essential" or whatever. I haven't seen several movies that have been listed so far. Here are some of my favorites:

Evil Dead trilogy
Star Wars episodes 4-6
The Usual Suspects
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Fight Club
Saving Private Ryan
Jaws
The Matrix
Equilibrium
Memento

I noticed that AKIRA has been mentioned twice (and this will the the third). It's an excellent movie that shouldn't be overlooked just because it's anime.

most of my favorite movies have already been listed, so I'll just give the ones that I didn't see up.

Avalon (Polish movie about VR)
eXistenZ
Shinobi
Romero's zombie movies (yes, I know they've already been mentioned, but I couldn't resist)
The Rock (with Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage)
Where Eagles Dare (fantastic Clint Eastwood WW2 movie about infiltrating a nazi castle!)
Fist of Legend (just about every Jet Li movie, actually)
Tombstone
Godfather Trilogy
Count of Monte Cristo
Dune (miniseries, not the movie)
Princess Bride
Drunken Master (Jackie Chan's best, imo)
The Road Warrior (like it a lot more than the first Mad Max movie)

as for documentaries, I haven't seen many, but I'm watching "The Question of God" right now, which goes about comparing the lives of Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis. Pretty interesting. Also saw Supersize Me a while back. Can't say it did much for me though. As soon as it was over I wanted a hamburger.

There are a couple I want to see, such as "Hitler's Search for the Holy Grail," "Hell - The Devil's Domain," which talks about the history of 'Hell' in mythology and different cultures, and last of all: "The Knights Templar"

some of those can be found on http://www.mvgroup.org/forums/

Bergman is a genius.  I have yet to be disappointed with anything of his I've seen.  Also, Winter Light, which I mentioned, is a Bergman film as well and I would say that it is probably my favorite film of his that I've seen.  The premise is a pastor has lost his faith in God and is not afraid to show it.  It's rather deep (duh!) and I know exactly how the guy feels, even though I've never been one to put much faith in God or anything.

I'll make sure to check out Tarkovsky as artsy films are right up my alley.

Zdan: I'm glad I'm not the only Kurosawa fan here.  If haven't seen it, check out Okamota's film The Sword of Doom.  The fight sequences are unreal and it's just a really twisted film.

Everyone else's lists are pretty good too.
