Question: How much do you care about a Guitar Solo in metal?
Love it - absolutely has to be there
Either way - don't care TOO much about it
I don't like them

Yeah. But they're meant to sound tortured and evil, not precise and wanky like Yngwie.

Agreed, same with Deicide's first albums.

Who cares if they're sloppy? I love sloppy music.

It's not so much the sloppiness of Slayer's solos that get me. It's that they sound like a kitten thrown into a blender. Random whammy bar abuse does not equal a solo.

The worst solo ever is on Mercyful Fate's "Curse Of The Pharaohs".  Not the album version, the demo version on "Return of the Vampire".

I don't think you can hate solos altogether and like metal at all at the same time.  ylsuper

But still, 7 out of 22 who don't care that much about solos is still a gigantic percentage compared to what I was expecting.

but - do those seven listen to extreme metal, like Origin, Decrepit Birth, or black metal mostly? it'd be interesting to see that broken down

What do you mean? I don't know about Decrepit Birth but Origin is stock full of absolutely awesome solos. Some tech death metal songs sound like one gigantic solo anyway.

most of the origin i've heard doesnt have solos. i mean - they have sweeps in parts of their songs - but - i wouldnt call those solos - those are more riffs, cause they repeat (i have songs like Staring from the Abyss, and The Aftermath in mind). but ya - their stuff is more like one gigantic solo, so - to throw one more in just for the sake of having a "solo" in there would just be a waste, y'know?
