Whatever man, I'll just be going to Doom Metal Inquisition so I can see 2 Sludge bands play. I suppose your argument concerning Sludge not being Metal is the same thing anyone can do for your beloved genres of Funeral Doom and Gothic Doom.

Funeral Doom started with some moronic fools called WARNING "Funeral Doom" due their slow pace and it started from there. Does that make it a valid genre? If anything, it has more in common with down-tempo noise which isn't even Metal at all... Like KHANATE or some shit.

Erm what? Are you talking about Patrick Walker Warning? Maybe I'm getting a bit confused here, but I was always under the impression that the term "funeral doom" stemmed from bands formed much earlier than Warning and the term was used to describe their depressive, bleak form of music (not neccesarily bceause they were "slow"), like Funeral, Skepticism, Thergothon, and Mournful Congregation...no? At least that's how I interpret it.

Anyway, I'm not going to argue that funeral doom is metal either because the arguement will never end and as I said before, it doesn't really matter because I will love funeral doom whether it is considered metal or not.

the argument CAN come to an end - its just a simple matter of discussing what makes something metal, not what makes something enjoyable.

Metal, the way i understand it, is as follows:

*Distorted Guitars
*Increasingly complex RIFFS
*Generally Solos (at least differing lead/rhythm guitar riff parts), or symphonic elements
*Mature Lyrics (some extreme genres have over-the-top gory lyrics, some mystical/occult, some satanic)
*Non-faggy singing, whether Growls, Screams, Clean Vocals, Falsetto, or something new (Doug Stanhope defense - sorry to any gay people - i use "fag" as a word of weakness - and attach no sexual preference to it - hell - my business partner is Bi - *shrug*)
*desire to write music for the sake of making good music, not to gain notoriety, money, fame, etc.

does "sludge metal" fit those categories (or - a more refined version of said categories). feel free to edit those as you see fit, but remember - we're making guidelines for ALL metal, not just black, death, thrash, and traditional. what applies to one, must apply to all others, and STILL keep shit like Nu Metal out. (speaking of that - i should make a new thread....)

Can of worms...opened!

There's no point discussing what makes metal, if you get metal then you should know it as soon as you hear it.

As well as being able to tell when something isn't.

That is my view.

..Thergothon..

The one band that single-handedly created Funeral Doom in my opinion.

Took me a few years to get it...

Hell up to about 2 years ago I thought Napalm Death were metal until I got laughed at by a guy in a bar in Spain who told me they were Grindcore...

We both agreed they were shit though...

y'know, even though this probably sounds stupid, i'm kinda proud of Napalm Death. They at least tried to do something new. even if its not great, i'm still much happier with the fact that they did their own thing, instead of just being another typical _____ band.

my opinion of Napalm Deaths music - Dig the Lyrics, everything else needs lots of work.

I like Napalm Death's Smear Campaign and Scum, but not really anything else from them.
