I'm not even going to argue that point. Some people like sludge, fine. I can't argue people out of what they like. But sludge is not metal. Sludge is just heaviness for the sake of it without riff or dynamic, and a heavy guitar sound does not make you metal.

It's not even music when you just downtune real low, crank your distortion up really high, position you guitar too close to your amp, and then take a dump on your strings and let it feedback for an entire album.

Fuck that, SLUDGE is Metal, since it is not directly affiliated with Hardcore, and that would be grind. Sludge are bands that are legit like CENTURIONS GHOST, AMONG THE MISSION, and LAZARUS BLACKSTAR that put shame to shitty Goth-Doom Death crap.

I like Lazarus Blackstar and a couple other bands that fall under the category of sludge, but I don't know if I'd call sludge metal on account of the punk and core influence. It can be mixed with metal certainly, Lazarus Blackstar seem to be pretty heavily influenced by traditional doom, and funeral doom on their newest EP, but sludge its self seems to fit better into the core spectrum, opposite to grind. There are a couple of sludge bands that I really enjoy when I'm in the right mood, I just don't know if I'd call it metal, or an attempt at it, seems to me to be something else entirely.
Then again metal has become so diverse a lot of newer genres are pretty alien to the traditional metal aesthetic and they're still widely accepted as metal. I don't really look at genres as a hierarchy with metal on the top so much as an easy means to classify and describe a band, like if someone says a band is a combination of funeral doom and black metal you have a pretty good idea of what to expect and whether or not it will appeal to you. I can see how a genre you hate getting lumped in with a genre you love could be annoying though.

That was actually the band that I was thinking of when writing that. I hate them and have no clue why anyone could possibly like them.

I don't really consider Grindcore metal. It obviously derives from metal, but since Grindcore is focused on blastbeats and being guttural and fast, plus the juvenile gross-out/porno lyrics, I see it as having almost nothing to do with the metal aesthetic.

Dude, sludge is DIRECTLY a product of hardcore and punk. It's just slowed down enough to fool people into thinking it's doom metal. I'm guessing you would say bands like Boris are metal too then (even though, like pretty much all sludge bands, they claim to be heavily influenced by the punk/grunge/hardcore crap like the Melvins). It really does not get clearer than that where sludge comes from and what it is.

Talk to the band and see what they say. Or Rich Walker for that matter.

I know that Sludge is, but it is not as affiliated to the masses of the Hardcore sub-culture as Crust is. Melvins were post-grunge, by the way.
