New Restaurant Named After Hitler
« on: August 24, 2006, 03:03:34 PM »

MUMBAI, India -- When Hitler's Cross restaurant opened four days ago in a Bombay suburb, local politicians and movie industry types were on hand to celebrate beneath posters of the Nazi leader and swastikas.

There's been little controversy in India, where Hitler is regarded as just another historical figure and swastikas are an ancient Hindu symbol, displayed all over to bring luck. There are just 5,500 Jews in all of India.

ADL National Director Abraham Foxman today expressed outrage; "Adolf Hitler presided over the mass murder of six million Jews and others in an attempt to dominate the world..." while Jonathan Solomon, chairman of the Indian Jewish Federation, vowed to "stop this deification of Hitler." Meanwhile, Daniel Zonshine, Israel's consul general in Bombay, promised to "force a name change."

At least one local leader said the name Hitler didn't bother him. "People are unnecessarily making this into an issue," said Sudhir Jadhav, a local ruling party leader. "We have no plans to protest outside the restaurant or ask him to change the name." Diners were also quite happy eating in Hitler's Cross.

I'm sure they put SPECIAL emphasis on the ovens. The water might be OK for washing as long as you don't drink it.

They changed the name already;

'Hitler' restaurant to change name Thu Aug 24, 9:54 AM ET

BOMBAY, India - The owner of a restaurant named after Adolf Hitler said Thursday he will change its name because it angered so many people.

Puneet Sablok said he would remove Hitler's name and the Nazi swastika from billboards and the menu. He had said the restaurant's name — "Hitler's Cross" — and symbols were only meant to attract attention.

Sablok made the decision after meeting with members of Bombay's small Jewish community.

"Once they told me how upset they were with the name, I decided to change it," he said. "I don't want to do business by hurting people."

Sablok said he had not yet decided on a new name.

Hitler's Cross opened five days ago and serves pizza, salad and pastries in Navi Mumbai, a suburb of Bombay, also known as Mumbai.

On Thursday, Bombay's Jewish community welcomed Sablok's decision to rename his restaurant.

"He realized he made a mistake and listened to reason," said Elijah Jacob, a community leader. "Some people have wrong conceptions of history and he realized it was not appropriate."

Bombay's Jews had called the theme of the restaurant offensive and demanded a name change. There are about 5,500 Jews in India, with about 4,500 of them living in Bombay.

"I never wanted to hurt people's feelings," said Sablok.

Some Indians regard Hitler as just another historical figure and have little knowledge about the Holocaust, in which 6 million European Jews were systematically killed during World War II.

The swastika symbol, which was appropriated by the Nazis, was originally an ancient Hindu symbol and it is displayed all over India to bring luck.

That's gay, I was thinking of going to that restaurant, but nevermind now that they changed the name. laugh

This reminds me, a couple weeks ago when I was up in the hills on vacation we were at this Native American museum and they had a couple rugs with swastikas on them. Apparently Native Americans used the Swastika as a symbol, I forget exactly what for though.

Almost every culture in the world uses their own version of the Sunwheel, as it is a symbol of the sun which has been worshiped by almost every culture in humanity's antiquity.  Everyone from the ancient Cambodians, to the ancient Toltecs (and later Aztecs) to ancient China, the classical Romans and Greeks, and (of course the most famous) Nordic and Slavic Europeans.  Even the ancient Jews (from Judea or Israel) used a sunwheel.  The odd coincidence, is that throughout all the millenia, the swastika was a very important, and sometimes even holy symbol to people all over the world, but it remained so similar in it's depiction that it hints at an original source.  This is especially apparent if one accepts that North America was not visited until Leifr Eiríksson in the 1300s.

Until the symbol was adopted by the National Socialist German Workers Party in the 30's the symbol was widly used even in the western world.  There were sunwheels on American road signs to mark Native reserves, there were army patches and badges dipicting sunwheels and there are even sunwheels in some of the archetecture in Washington.

Gas chambers? I really don't know why he was forced to change the name. Whatever happened to FREEDOM? So one can't choose to associate himself with a political figure? Why? The British killed and enslaved millions during the colonial era but we don't feel ashamed of glorifying Victoria or Elizabeth and we've named entire eras after them!

In related news, Germany is giving three nuclear-capable submarines to Israel worth US$1.3 Billion, of which Germany's gonna pay a third of the cost. I wonder how long this "guilty feeling" will last with the Europeans. I mean, come on!

he wasn't forced to. It says he did it on his own initiative because he saw that people were reacting negatively.

You should've seen how the print and tv media made a major issue out of it. If I open a restraunt tomorrow after Winston Churchill, I'll see how much hype there's around it. Are you suggesting that there isn't bias involved when anything regarding Hitler is brought up?

no, not saying that. Just saying he didn't HAVE to change it.

Of course he did.  If he did not change it, he would have lost all business and probably have his establishment shut down - especially once the international (UN, USA, ADL et cetera) took an interest in it.  The same thing happened with "hitler themed" bar in Singapore a while ago.
